Immune Support from the Sea
We dread getting sick. Colds, flu and other viral attacks can be painful, debilitating or even deadly. We now know that sufficient rest together with a healthful diet and exercise can do much to maintain a robust immune system that can resist viral attacks.

Is There Anything Else We Can Do?
Botanical science has discovered and identified a substantial number of substances and compounds from plants that can improve functions of the human immune response. They have probably been playing that supporting role as part of the human diet for millennia. One specialized group of immune enhancing substances is the sulfated polysaccharides, sulfur containing complex sugars.

Where Do We Find Them? What Do They Do?
Sulfated polysaccharides can make up a significant portion of the biomass of certain large leaf algae in the sea. More than 25 strains of Red Marine Algae (RMA) are known to contain significant amounts of sulfated polysaccharides. Difficulty lies in finding the species of RMA that are most potent, for the ability to support and strengthen immune response varies relates to the content of sulfated polysaccharides. The more, the better.

Sulfated polysaccharides are complex sugars that contain sulfur. Carrageenan and other gel-like substances are derived from this family of polysaccharides. Research is still incomplete, but several RMAs rich in sulfated polysaccharides have been shown to reduce the infectivity of Herpes simplex I and II, influenza, and HIV, in the few human trials conducted to date.

The major questions yet to be answered are:

1) Are there other specific substances in RMA besides sulfated polysaccharides that support immunity and inhibit viral activity
2) Do sulfated polysaccharides only boost immune response or do they themselves suppress or possibly kill susceptible viruses?

What We Know
Several years of study have shown that just a few species of RMA are rich in sulfated polysaccharides. Researchers have witnessed how these algae promote an effective cell-mediated immune response to certain viruses.

We also know that some -- perhaps many -- sulfated polysaccharides inhibit a step in viral replication both outside and inside infected cells. As most Herpes sufferers know, the virus safely hides and lies dormant between attacks within host nerve cells. If antiviral substances from certain RMA can reach them while they are napping, and either inhibit their ability to make more of themselves or kill them outright, then RMA may prove to be a food that could help control outbreaks.

Laboratory work shows that certain sulfated polysaccharides inhibit viral reverse transcriptase enzyme. Reverse transcriptase enzyme is used by the RNA of the virus to direct the DNA of the host cell to make more copies of the virus. The enzyme forces the cell to become a virus factory. It is through such parasitic action that a virus is able to replicate itself by using the resources of the host cell it has entered.

Inhibiting the enzyme inhibits the spread of the virus by blocking off future generations. If it is confirmed that sulfated polysaccharides from RMA interfere with the function of viral RNA and its reverse transcriptase messengers, the possibility exists that even the viral particles responsible for the initial invasion may be held in check and later die or be destroyed by natural Killer (NK) cells, the angry police of our immune systems. Besides interfering with viral duplication, there are other indications that some types of sulfated polysaccharides may block viruses from entering cells, and/or may kill them outright. But those functions are yet to be proved unequivocally.

Enter Gigartina
If a consensus of scientific opinion eventually verifies that sulfated polysaccharides do all that has been indicated in the early extant studies, then strains of Gigartina algae are the best source of supplemental sulfated polysaccharides yet discovered. Vibrant Health's "Gigartina" red marine algae has been developed in joint venture with SeaTech Bioproducts. It is the result of a rigorous search among red macro-algae for those with the most sulfated polysaccharides.

The product Vibrant Health offers contains five species of RMA from the family Gigartinaceae. Our analysis verifies a very high content of sulfated polysaccharides per gram of algae powder. Four capsules deliver one gram of the algae without the use of any excipients.

Polysaccharides and Sterols
The immune support benefits of RMA are presumed to be locked in their content of sulfated polysaccharides as explained above. In addition, red macro algae are known to contain a high level of plant sterols and sterolins. These fatty alcohols and alcohol-sugar complexes are now known to stimulate the human immune response even though only a small fraction (2%-4%) of plant sterols are ever absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is possible then that RMA provides a two-pronged stimulus to the immune response. Our Gigartinaceae strains give every indication of being the richest source of sulfated polysaccharides and sterols from the sea.

In addition, red algae are known to contain a high level of plant sterols and sterolins. These fatty alcohols and alcohol-sugar complexes are now known to stimulate the human immune response even though only a small fraction (2%-4%) of plant sterols are ever absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is possible that RMA provides a two-pronged attack against viruses by not only inhibiting the activity of the virus, but also by causing a heightened immune response to actually seek and destroy viruses. Whatever the mechanism or mechanisms of action may be, certain strains of red marine algae with their high polysaccharide and sterol content are quite effective at suppressing herpes and herpes related viruses.
